The Subtle Message Found in Ivanka and Melania Trump’s Voting Outfits on Election Day
Throughout the 2016 presidential campaign, Hillary Clinton and the white pantsuit became synonymous. The Democratic candidate wore different versions by designer Ralph Lauren to the party’s national convention in July — when Clinton became the first woman to accept a presidential nomination — and again for the third and final debate.
In both instances, many on social media were quick to point out that American suffragists wore white during their protests a century ago to win for women the right to vote, and Clinton’s fans have used the color throughout her campaign to advocate for her candidacy. Women across the nation have even adopted a campaign to wear white to vote to honor feminists and mark this election’s milestone in our country’s history.

That being said, it’s no surprise that the Twitterverse found irony in the fact that Melania and Ivanka Trump both wore white to vote at P.S. 59 in New York City on Tuesday morning.

Melania, the candidate’s wife, wore a classy white sheath paired with a wool camel jacket, while daughter Ivanka opted for a white wrap coat over a black turtleneck and trousers.

Twitter was abuzz with speculation on Melania’s and Ivanka’s true presidential preference because of their white garments; some Clinton supporters thought that the color choice alluded to their support for the Democratic candidate.

Others wondered if the Trumps had any idea what the color preference symbolized on this monumental day.

Now we have to remind social media that Melania herself is a big fan of white.
She chose the color for her speech at the Republican National Convention in July, wearing a $2,190 dress by Serbian designer Roksanda Ilincic. Serbia was once a part of Yugoslavia, as was Melania Trump’s native Slovenia, and many saw her choice as a subtle nod to her former countrywoman.
She also wore a white, high-waisted pencil skirt during a stump speech for her husband late last week.
So although the color white may be seen by some as a secret ode to Hillary Clinton, it’s also the color of the house the Trump family wishes to inhabit. Maybe the message isn’t so subtle after all.
The White house is only made for one woman, @MELANIATRUMP! #GOTRUMP #TrumpForPresident
