The Devil Wears Crocheted Bikini Tops
Hailey Baldwin didn’t walk today’s Prada show, but her influence was still weirdly felt on the runway. That’s because 10 models wore crocheted bikinis during today’s show, evoking Baldwin’s infamous swimsuit shots with Justin Bieber. Of course, knit swimwear isn’t just clickbait — it’s a classic ’70s style that riffs on rock festivals and beach communes. But thanks to Instagram’s steady takeover of the human psyche, it’s where our minds immediately zoomed. Alas, these tops are for fall 2017, which means you might not be able to get them until the tail end of beach season in August. (Unless you’re willing to settle for the non-Prada version, which is far less glamorous but way more available on Etsy. Prices start around $25.)
Miuccia Prada paired the tiny knit tops with matching crocheted scarves, fuzzy coats, oversized newsboy caps, and massive feathery hoods in jelly-bean shades of tangerine, kiwi, and grapefruit. If Fraggle Rock featured a Nanook of the North episode, these would make a glorious appearance. They matched a series of furry boots decked out with pompoms and massive fuzzy slippers in sky blue, purple, and beige. The snuggly footwear was worn by fashion bombshells like Anna Ewers, Lindsey Wixson, social justice activist Cameron Russell, and teen newbie Kris Grikaite.
Several models wore rows of cowrie shells as layered necklaces. Interestingly, the shells, which are a traditional African symbol of female power and were recently spotted in Solange’s braids for her Don’t Touch My Hair video, also happen to be a favorite look of surfer girls! Just like (yes!) those crocheted bikinis.
