The “Anna Rexia” Costume Is Offensive (Duh) & an Eating Disorder Sufferer Explains Why

Lauren TuckNews Editor
Serious eating disorder in costume form is called?“Anna Rexia.”?

You know what’s not cool? A Halloween costume that trivializes a really serious health condition. But you know what is? Making a really awesome argument about why it’s offensive and subsequently getting media attention for it. Jessi Davin, a 26-year-old anorexia sufferer, took to Tumblr to passionately explain her point. "Think Anorexia is funny? Sorry. I am a survivor and find NOTHING cute about this,“ she wrote of the skeleton dress that comes with a yellow measuring tape. "I almost died from this. I know it’s supposed to be funny and s*** and yeah I get that, but seriously. THIS IS NOT FUNNY.” She continued, “Anorexia is nothing to party about or laugh at. It’s real, it’s deadly, and should not be marketed as a slutty outfit.” She added photos from a hospitalization and others from throughout her battle in the post as well. The costume was previously pulled a few years ago after it was discovered in New York, but is seemingly still on the market despite the negative attention.

The pressure’s on people! With Halloween only weeks away, it’s time to start racking your brain for the biggest cultural events of the past few months to copy in costume form. From the birth of Princess Charlotte and the Women’s World Cup to Hillary Clinton’s presidential bid and Taylor Swift’s Bad Blood music video, there are plenty of moments to capitalize on in order to make a statement. But making the right one is important and there are some costumes to steer clear of in order to avoid debate, altercations, really weird looks from across the room all night, and outright denial when trick or treating. Use this as a handy guide as to what not to wear.
