There’s a Reason These Barbie Dolls Remind You of Beyoncé

For many of us, Barbie was our first fashion icon. She may still be for children today, but to adults, she also might resemble a real-life fashion queen: Beyoncé. That’s because Marni Senofonte, the stylist who created the looks for Lemonade, has teamed up with Mattel. The Barbie + Marnixmarni line, which debuted on Instagram Thursday, takes the doll to new levels of cool.

“It’s been an extraordinary experience seeing my vision come to life through Barbies of different sizes and colors, all looking fly!” Senofonte said on the Instagram post. She’s referring to the dolls in the Barbie Fashionistas collection — which have four different body types and varying skin tones, eye color and hair textures — that first hit stores last year.

“It was just so important to me with the Barbie collection to show a curvy woman or a shorter woman that it’s all possible,” Senofonte told InStyle. “I want a girl who is not necessarily small to say, ‘Okay, I could wear a crop top and I could wear jeans with big holes in it and fishnets underneath it and I am cute … everyone can have this. Everyone can do it. And everyone in every size — we can all be cute. It’s not just for a certain size or a certain color.”

The stylist told the magazine that she got an early start in her career, customizing her Barbie dolls’ outfits as a girl. “Any kind of ribbon that I had, or whatnot, I would play around with and make her shoes strap all the way up to her thighs… [Barbie] was like the first kind of object that I was able to express [creativity] through clothing.”

Based on the Instagram photos and exclusive pics in InStyle, Senofonte had fun with this project. There is a denim cape, a denim shirt with a floor-length train, bedazzled boyfriend jeans, and a few Victorian-meets-bondage lace, leather, and fur costumes. One doll wears runway-worthy crown with a face cage. Another sports a leather cap over an Afro that’s the distinct shade of a certain Lemonade-sipping diva’s hair.

Barbie + Marnixmarni aren’t available for purchase yet, so we’ll have to settle for Senofonte’s excited posts about them for now.
