Turtlenecks and Cropped Trousers: Olivia Palermo Shares Her Top Styling Tips
On Day 1 of NYFW this season, global retail giant Banana Republic decided to host a different type of Fashion Week experience than it has put on in the past — one that catered to the consumer, rather than the usual runway show for fashion editors.
Banana Republic launched a pop-up shop hosted by its global style ambassador Olivia Palermo inside its Soho store in Manhattan. The experience by Palermo focused on everything she loves — including all her favorite Banana Republic pieces (from the Spring 2017 collection) and also products from brands outside the Banana Republic umbrella.

For example, a Louis Vuitton bag sat on a pristine white shelf, juxtaposed with coffee-table books on Veuve Clicquot, Diana Vreeland, and Peter Lindbergh. Not to mention, luxury Vianel phone cases sat on tables alongside Diptyque candles and Cosabella undergarments.
It was a glimpse inside Palermo’s world. But we wanted a glimpse inside her closet. The 30-year-old, who has 4.6 million followers on Instagram, rose to fame in 2008 after being cast on MTV’s The City alongside Whitney Port, but she has maintained her fame due to her impeccable personal style. So we asked her to give us a few key styling tips that are essential to every fashionable woman.
1. Find a tailor
“I always say it’s really important to have a great tailor. It could just be your local dry cleaner, and even if it’s just a quarter of an inch, that little difference goes a long way.”
2. Layer up!
“I think you know just to take basic pieces and layer, whether it’s just a skinny turtleneck, and wear it under a dress.”
3. Stock up on cropped trousers and statement coats and blouses for your day-to-night work wardrobe
“You know, I always think it’s important to think of proportion on pants. A pair of cropped trousers are great because you can wear them with flats if you worked during the day and then in the evening put on a strappy pair of heels with them, or a great statement coat is always a great way to go. I personally love chiffon … silk blouses with statement sleeves.”
But we have to know, does Palermo have a special trick to picking out her daily, stylish looks?
“No. I get dressed for everything,” she laughs.
And there you have it! The basics to transforming your style instantly, courtesy of the one and only O.P.
We spoke to Michael Anderson, SVP of design at Banana Republic, to get more insight into the whole pop-up shop experience. “We wanted to make sure that it felt intimate. Well, ‘intimate’ with 5,000 people, but an intimate setting,” he said. “So the way it is in there, it looks almost like your living room or your lounge, and you’re hanging out in a beautifully curated space, so really it’s like a very personal journey for [Palermo] and what she wants to give us and what we give her. It’s very compatible, you know? She has great style, which is similar toBanana’s, so it’s been awesome. We’re really excited.”
And the reason behind choosing Olivia?
According to Lexi Takes, Banana Republic’s SVP of global merchandising, “Honestly, Olivia is the most fashionable lady we know. And so I would say there’s nothing that says fashion week like being with her. So I think to have a party with a lot of our friends, influencers, and people who love to shop our brand and give them a sense to be part of a Fashion Week party — she’s the ultimate hostess.”
