Used Crocs Are Selling Like Hotcakes, According to This Site
Scoff all you want at Crocs, but they’re a hot seller — even when they’re used.
That’s according to a new report by the retail resale website thredUP, which found that the rubber clogs have the highest resell rate of any mall brand on its site — including Anthropologie, Free People, and H&M. A whopping 97 percent of Crocs inventory sells within three months of being listed, which is 58 percent faster than items typically sell on the website.
The January data is “phenomenally higher” than what the company would normally see for the popularity of Crocs, says thredUP’s head of marketing communications, Karen Clark.
“We were surprised to see Crocs so high on list,” Clark tells Yahoo Style. “For brands with that high a sell-through rate, it’s almost impossible to find them on the site. They just fly off the shelves.”
It’s true that the data is perplexing, given that Crocs are neither seasonal in January nor particularly fashionable, at any time (unless you’re Christopher Kane, and even still …). The shoe — which lists for an average price of $11 on the thredUP site and retails normally for more than triple — is most popular in Brooklyn, N.Y.; the District of Columbia; and Alexandria, Va., according to purchases made over the past six months on thredUP. Again, a bit of a head-scratcher.
Clark thinks the surge may be attributable to a campaign Crocs launched with Drew Barrymore and John Cena, which mirrored a strategy the company adopted in 2007, when it reached “peak Croc” with the help of celebrity chef and endorser Mario Batali.
Whether the price tag says $11 or $350, the masses, it seems, will not be deterred.
