Slip Dresses & Doc Martens: Celine’s Going to Help You Look Like Drew Barrymore circa ‘92

Here in Paris, it’s hard to find an editor who isn’t adorned with a Céline something. The knit dresses are everywhere, as are the thick-heeled pumps, and the unmistakable floral print blouses. Everyone always loves what Phoebe Philo creates, even if they don’t realize it right away. It takes ahold of you, like when you’re in a relationship but friends for a long time but then realize, doh! I’m in love.

So the good news is that you’ll still be falling for Phoebe when it’s time to do your spring shopping. And maybe she’s falling for us a bit as well — if last season’s long cloak-like silhouettes boarded on monastic, this time around Philo was a rather rapacious flirt (and we liked it!) The first look — a while slip dress with lace panels over the bosom exposing the models’ breasts — was a provocative start. From there the lingerie-inspired pieces were worn under coats and shrunken into camisoles and worn with pants.

But this being Philo and not, say, Roberto Cavalli, it wasn’t going to be all sexy playthings throughout the whole collection. The designer excels at presenting clothes that prove covering up can be just as tantalizing. With that in mind, there were a parade short-sleeved dresses that stopped right above the ankle, voluminous smock-like turtleneck dresses, and the suggestive but subtle white mink robe coats.

Philo demanded attention to the waist with dresses that billowed at the shoulder and sleeves but narrowed considerably in the midsection. One model wore a silky pea green coat with cutouts that were replaced with brown knit panels. The empowered, self assured woman that Philo designs for will look great in it. And what’s sexier than that?
