What Happens to the Dresses That Don't Make the Red Carpet Cut?

Before choosing “the one,” stylists pull dozens, sometimes even hundreds of dress for their clients to see in advance of any red carpet, let alone the Oscars. But in the end, even the biggest star can only wear one (or two or three if they perform and/or go to a party). But it’s whatever they wear during arrivals that earns the attention at the top of the night—and determines where a star falls on the best (or worst) dressed list. And if you’re Dakota Johnson, currently starring in 50 Shades of Grey, what you wear to the Oscars is going to be the talk of the town.

Johnson’s stylist Kate Young (who also works with Sienna Miller) ultimately dressed the actress in a red Saint Laurent gown, featuring one knotted shoulder of silver chain. The look was a hit, but the dresses Johnson didn’t wear are gorgeous too. We know because Young’s assistant Instagrammed an image of she and her boss captioned lounging in two particularly spectacular looks: “#backupcouture.” Young later regrammed, captioning her version: “the beautiful dresses that didn’t make it…#oscars2015” (And the dress Young wears on the right has a similiar motif, with a silver snake wrapping over the left shoulder.)
Custom gowns accessorized with pink champagne and Red Vines sounds like our kind of party. Can we come next year?
