Who Wore It Best? Amal Clooney vs Ruth Bader Ginsburg
Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Amal Clooney love to wear gloves.
Gloves are having a moment. The accessory, who last had it’s heyday in the ’80s thanks to pop icons Madonna and Michael Jackson, seems to be making a comeback thanks to the women of the judicial system.
Amal Clooney, noted human rights lawyer and as of recent, wife of George Clooney, hit the Golden Globes red carpet earlier this month in a blindingly white pair of opera-length gloves. According to the actor, she just “whipped up” the statement-making accessory herself before they left for the awards show. The gloves, which were said to be a possible protest against the “Mani Cam,” caused quite a stir and divided the nation between those who considered the look a yay or a nay.

On Tuesday night at the State of the Union address, however, when Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States Ruth Bader Ginsburg was shown on camera greeting President Obama, the voting public (a.k.a Twitter) was thrilled to see the 81-year-old wearing short, black, fishnet gloves. Ginsburg has long favored short gloves to formal events, but it seems that this is the first time we really took notice of what a fashion statement it really is.

I was not sold on Amal’s accessory choice at the Golden Globes, but seen in this context against Ginsburg’s statement, it all has started to make sense. Now that these two women have declared gloves the new must-have accessory, will designers follow suit? Will other celebrities be compelled to cover their hands in satin or mesh at future red carpet events? These are exciting times that we are living in, and only one question remains… Who wore it best?
