Why Awards Darling Isabelle Huppert Will Never ‘Suffer’ for Fashion
By Ingrid Schmidt
She’s been having quite the week/month/year.
French acting icon Isabelle Huppert shocked the crowd when she won for Best Actress in a Motion Picture, Drama, at the Golden Globes, beating out favorite Natalie Portman. And she again walked home with a prize on Saturday, courtesy of Los Angeles Film Critics Association (winners were announced ahead of time).
Even more killer: her Dior pantsuit with a double-breasted jacket, worn sans jewelry. While her characters seem to have a penchant for suffering, Huppert stressed that she was feeling no fashion pain on the red carpet.
“You never want to suffer for style. I feel very comfortable,” she said. “I like dresses and outfits that make me different from what I am and still what I am. For me, that’s what you seek in an outfit. It’s been a very sunny day, and the week has been wonderful for me, so I thought white would be the appropriate color.”
Pantsuits are one of the hottest trends lately, on and off the red carpet, with some wearing the look as an homage to Hillary Clinton. Evan Rachel Wood and Octavia Spencer both wore a pantsuit to the Globes. Asked whether her pantsuit was making any sort of political statement, Huppert said simply, “Let’s hope.”
Moonlight took home the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture, Drama, and the universally praised coming-of-age film from Barry Jenkins was also named best picture by LAFCA. Best Actor honors went to Adam Driver for Paterson, while Huppert was named Best Actress for Elle and Things to Come. Supporting accolades went to Mahershala Ali for Moonlight and Lily Gladstone for Certain Women.
Gladstone was relaxed in an off-the-rack ensemble devoid of jewels. Her cold-shoulder Lattori dress by Ukranian designer Julia Savenkova (that looks like an iridescent slate top paired with a gray midi skirt) can be purchased for $379 at lattori.com.
“I’ll get better at this, I promise,” said Gladstone, a newcomer to the red carpet, after asking a friend to check the tag in the back of her dress and reporting back later on the make of her Bruno Magli heels. “I don’t think the Rancher [her character in Certain Women] would come within five miles of this place, but if she were here, I feel like she’d definitely be wearing flats!” said the 31-year-old actress. “Last week at the BAFTA [Tea Party], I had a long gown on, and I [secretly] wore my cowboy boots under it. That helped!”
When it comes to style icons, Gladstone is all about Anjelica Huston circa 1970: “She is gorgeous, western, gothic, striking,” said Gladstone. “One thing I’ve learned about my own body is not to be so afraid of something that’s bold. If it looks scary on the hanger, just try it. It’s probably going to be amazing. And I think that’s good life advice. If it looks scary and out of the norm, just go for it anyway, because you might surprise yourself.”
As for men’s style, Moonlight director Barry Jenkins and Ali both worked dark suits with cropped pants and contrasting brown shoes. “I raise the hemline on everything; that’s my thing,” said Jenkins. “A little ankle goes a long way.”
