Why Peter Copping’s Spring 2016 Collection For Oscar de la Renta Was His Best One Yet
It’s been well documented that Peter Copping didn’t start his job as the creative director for the house of Oscar de la Renta under the easiest of circumstances. Though his appointment had been confirmed, the beloved patriarch passed away before they could really have time working together. With that heavy mantle to carry, Copping did the best he could with that first ready-to-wear collection, but it was obviously a somber debut.
Since then he’s worked through a few more collections, including bridal and resort, before bringing us to Spain for Spring 2016. Upon entering the venue, you knew the vibe was going to be different. The venue, was filled with color in the form of beautiful pink chairs and deep scarlet carnations adorned each one.
From the first look, we knew it was going to be good. A ruby red jacquard jacket with matching pencil dress, the color alone made it a knock out ensemble. Red, the symbol of love and passion! It was an invigorating start.
Copping said that the collection was inspired by Spain, specifically when de la Renta used to go there and attend the bullfights. The carnations were thrown into the arena, and aside from being represented on the chairs of the attendees, they also manifested in different sizes as vibrant prints and patterns on gowns. He also looked to Ava Gardner, whom de la Renta met in the fifties, but could have worn some of the glamorous pieces shown for Spring 2016 and would not have seemed out of place.
“When I looked at some of the pieces in the lineup, I was thinking yes, they look really spot on for the house, others I thought, that looks new for the house as well,” Copping told Vogue.com. “I think that’s important too.”
Felicidades to Copping for finding his way to marry own brilliance with that of his predecessor.
