Taylor Swift & Karlie Kloss Cover 'Vogue' Together
You know what the greatest feeling in the world is? Getting to say I told you so. Yahoo Style reported in January that Karlie Kloss and Taylor Swift would appear on the cover of Vogue together, taking their already questionably close friendship to the next level. And nothing says BFFs for life more than Anna Wintour’s seal of approval. The March issue, which could only be found at one newsstand in the Garment District in New York City, features the top model and pop star shot against sweeping views of Big Sur, California. The Amazonian duo is dressed to match the dreamy laid-back lifestyle in bohemian dresses, floor-length skirts, and beaded tops by Saint Laurent, Gucci, Valentino, and more.
In homage to that legendary road trip the duo publicized on Instagram last year, Swift drives a convertible with the top down along the PCH, her hair blowing in the wind, while Kloss takes a turn behind the lens, playfully snapping shots of the songstress. Later, they cuddle in an Airstream and take selfies, read books, dance, sing, play guitar, and, finally, snuggle in bed.
Photographed by Mikael Jansson, the “unstoppable, Inseparable, Adorable” friends also tell writer Jada Yuan a lot about their “VIP” friendship. Here are the best nuggets we learned.
—They first met backstage at the 2013 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show. Lily Aldridge introduced the pair and upon meeting Swift said, “You. My friend. Now.” Swift has a Polaroid picture of the two hugging on her photo wall and the caption reads “Best Friends Forever VS2013” in Sharpie.
—Swift calls Lorde by her given name, Ella. The first time they met they went to Shake Shack and were attacked by squirrels.
—“People are finally starting to discuss her artistry—how she’s on the level of some of the great all-time songwriters,” Jack Antonoff, Lena Dunham’s boyfriend and co-writer of Swift’s told the mag. “The other day my grandmother was asking me about 1989. We’re all talking about it. In my lifetime, I haven’t experienced that since Michael Jackson—that one artist who stands about and unites us all.”
—Jaime King is the “Earth Mother” figure in Swift’s extensive friend group.
—Swift started spending so much time with her female friends because of the way she was being portrayed in the media as a man-eater. “I was really irritated by the whole serial-dater play that people tried to make about me.”
—Taylor Swift’s philosophy for making friends is “basically, wear ‘em down till they like you.”
—The best friendship between the two cover stars was “instantaneous.”
—When Swift is wearing heels and Kloss wearing flats then they clock in at the same height.
—Swift’s stylist shops for her and puts items into her closet.
—On them dressing alike: “Just like, ‘Ugh, be more annoying.” We couldn’t possibly be,” Swift said.
—People told Swift for years that she should meet Karlie and induct her into her circle because makeup artists and hair stylists thought they were similar. They say they’re a good match because they’re both “real girls” and “normal people.”
—Swift follows the five-second rule.
—Lena Dunham, another member of this particular girl posse, says Swift is just, like, the bestest friend ever: “Even if she’s in Hong Kong on tour and I’m going through something, if I text her, I get an answer in two seconds. If something good happens to me—say, I get a nomination, or it’s my birthday, or the day before my birthday, or my book comes out—I get a text from Taylor way before I get a text from my mom.”
—Swift thought Lorde sounded stressed out about the Golden Globes, so she showed up wearing a yellow dress in honor of the song “Yellow Flicker Heartbeat.”
—Kloss says, “For me, runway is an opportunity to perform.” But that’s not enough: she was recently accepted to NYU’s Gallatin School of Individualized Study and Christy Turlington Burns wrote her a letter of recommendation.
—Swift doesn’t talk shop: “The fun thing about my friends is that they don’t necessarily know a lot about what I do business-wise.”
—The first time Kloss ever saw Swift pick up a guitar was at the photoshoot.
