Baytech-HMS Takes Home Award for Ecological Stones

Turkish startup Baytech-HMS (HMS) has been awarded the first prize in the Techstyle for Social Good Global Innovation Challenge organized by The Mills Fabrica for its innovative and sustainable approach to denim washing.

HMS manufactures ecological stones that offer a more durable and efficient alternative to traditional pumice stones used in denim washing. These patented stones create a variety of washes and effects while significantly reducing water and energy consumption. They last 50 times more than the conventional stones, work in cold water, require at least 20 percent less water per load.

The technology can be customized for clients’ various needs. Made with recycled materials, the reusable composite stones come in various sizes, density and shapes to create different results.

The Techstyle for Social Good Global Innovation Challenge is an annual competition that recognizes innovative solutions to sustainability challenges in fashion and agriculture. HMS was selected from more than 150 applicants and was named one of 8 finalists from Brazil, Hong Kong, Thailand and the U.K.

To be eligible, at least one member of the company’s core team must be a student or has graduated within the past three years?. Beyza Baykan, CEO of Baytech-HMS, graduated University of South California in 2022.

The grand prize includes a mentorship from leading sustainable materials science company Pangaia, free office space in London and incubation by The Mills Fabrica, which has provided significant support and resources to further accelerate the growth of Baytech-HMS.

“We are incredibly proud to have won this prestigious award,” Baykan said. “This is a testament to our commitment to innovation and sustainability. We are proud that HMS is helping to make the fashion industry more environmentally friendly.”

HMS’s ecological stones are being utilized by circular denim brand Mud Jeans, as well as in the R&D of mills like AGI Denim and Bossa. Though they were originally produced for the denim sector, the stones are also being used by many companies for knitted and woven fabrics.
