Is Elon Musk's xAI coming to Memphis Electrolux site? Why facility has been vacant and what to know

News broke yesterday that Elon Musk is attempting to build a supercomputer in Memphis, but where is it going?

While there has been no confirmation on the location, it is expected that xAI will move into the Electrolux facility location in southwest Memphis as the owners of the facility were among the businesses thanked in the announcement. The official location was not announced for security concerns, according to Memphis Chamber President and CEO Ted Townsend.

Phoenix Investors purchased the 785,000 square foot facility in December 2023 for $35 million.

Here is what we know about the facility.

Where is the Electrolux facility located?

The location for the old Electrolux facility is located at 3231 Paul Lowry Road, also listed as 3231 Riverport Road, in southwest Memphis.

It is close to a 42-acre industrial property that was certified by the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development in January. The facility is also a mile and a half down the road from the Tennessee Valley Authority's Allen Combined Cycle Plant which was formerly the Allen Fossil Plant.

What is Electrolux?

Electrolux is a home appliance store from Sweden. The company sells to customers worldwide. It is the second largest appliance maker in the world behind Whirlpool. The store was first founded in 1919 and is based in Stockholm, Sweden.

Items produced include vacuums, refrigerators, food processors, dishwashers, washing machines and more.

Why is the Electrolux facility vacant?

Electrolux closed the facility and moved to a larger location north of Nashville in 2020. It first opened in 2012 in Memphis, and within ten years had closed up shop. It announced its closure in 2018 and gave the 530 employees two years to fin other jobs.
