Nike Is Introducing a New C1ty Sneaker That Looks a Lot Like Tom Sachs’ General Purpose Shoe

Those who lamented over the short lifespan of Tom Sachs’ Nike All Purpose Shoe are likely to rejoice in the introduction of a similar silhouette.

The Nike C1ty is set to debut this week while taking clear inspiration from both the GPS and the Field General, an ’80s football shoe that was just brought out of the archives this year. The low-profile sneaker looks like an mashup of the aforementioned models, with the lines of the Field General and the same flexible mesh used on the General Purpose Shoe. Mesh appears on the vamp and around the collar, while the rest of the upper’s paneling is made out of suede, save for a leather Swoosh. The outsole also looks just like that of the GPS, only with a new two-tone treatment.

For its debut, the C1ty features a grey upper complemented by a more blue-grey midsole. Volt green accents include the heel pull, insole and portions of the outsole. The rest of the outsole then appears in black, while the Swoosh is rendered in white.

An additional colorway with more of a uniform grey look for the upper and midsole, as well as orange accents, is expected to drop later in 2024, although it has released in some regions already.

Sachs’ General Purpose Shoe was made intentionally “boring” and was made more widely available than his two previous Mars Yard collaborations, to the point that it was sold in Kohl’s. The collaboration was a welcomed counter to the hype of high-profile releases and featured three colorways until Nike quietly pulled out of its partnership with the artist because of allegations concerning his treatment of employees at his studio.

The Field General, meanwhile, was seen by many as Nike’s answer to the popularity of the Adidas Samba. Nike’s revived football shoe hasn’t made much noise, though, and a collaboration on the model with Union has sat rather than selling out like many of their other joint projects.

The Nike C1ty will release in its grey and “Volt” colorway Wednesday, September 18, on Nike’s website. Pricing is set at $120.
