Detectorists Special, review: a spine-tingling coda to TV's most treasured show
It’s been five years since we last caught up with Lance and Andy, aka the stars of Detectorists (BBC Two), and the highest compliment that can be paid is that they haven’t changed a bit. A new, feature-length Christmas special sensibly eschewed festivities altogether, instead taking up with TV’s most laconic pairing much as we left them – together, in a field, with their metal detectors.

Scandaltown, Mike Bartlett's modern-day Restoration comedy, feels like champagne gone flat
You can’t accuse Mike Bartlett of running shy from genre. At the Old Vic, you can see his new play The 47th, which imagines the 2024 American presidential campaign by borrowing freely from Shakespearean blank verse, the same trick he used in King Charles III, his biggest success to date. His 2009 play Cock, currently playing at the Ambassadors, is a scabrous sexual comedy that nods to David Mamet. And now, at the Lyric, Hammersmith, comes Scandaltown, a boisterous new social satire in the pitile

Hollington Drive, episode 2, review: let’s play designer kitchen Cluedo, as this thriller heats up
Bang goes my theory. My guess after the opening episode of Hollington Drive (ITV) was that 10-year-old Alex hadn’t gone missing in the woods at all. He was just lost somewhere in Anna Maxwell Martin’s spacious kitchen. Just when everyone had given up hope, she’d suddenly find him curled up asleep in her KitchenAid's mixing bowl or hiding behind her collection of River Café cookbooks.

Hollington Drive, episode 1 review: nothing middle of the road about this suburban thriller
Nobody does suppressed fury quite like Anna Maxwell Martin, an actress who looks as if she wants to kill everyone. She deployed this to brilliant comic effect in Motherland and now she’s doing it for chills in Hollington Drive. It’s the kind of domestic thriller that ITV churns out by the dozen, but casting Maxwell Martin is a smart move because she’s such a good actress that she elevates the material.

Hollington Drive: the latest of TV's distracting obsession with designer-kitchen sink dramas
As she’s demonstrated in everything from Line of Duty to Bleak House, from Poppy Shakespeare to Motherland, Anna Maxwell Martin is one of our most accomplished TV actresses. In her new drama, though, the double Bafta-winner gets upstaged by her own kitchen.

Grantchester is a solid detective drama, but the 1950s don't need our modern ideals
Time for a confession: I had never seen Grantchester (ITV). From what I’d gleaned it seemed to be a hodge-podge of bits from other shows: a crime-solving clergyman, a 1950s period setting and a plain-speaking Robson Green, to name but three. Yet the fact it is back for a sixth series, and has proved to be a wildly popular international hit - sold to 162 countries - means it must have something going for it, so I settled down to my first episode.

Diana Rigg's Death Has Fans Remembering Olenna Tyrell's Dying Words on 'Game of Thrones' in a Whole New Light
"Tell Cersei. I want her to know it was me." As she uttered these words, Lady Olenna Tyrell braced for death — but not, of course, before getting in the last word. Lady Olenna Tyrell, played with icy bravado by Diana Rigg, died as she lived: cunning, fearless, and Cersei Lannister's worst nightmare. With the […]
