‘Blue Road: The Edna O’Brien Story’ Review: Well-Timed Doc Reads Between the Lines of the Late Novelist’s Life

  • “I pursued the glitz for a while. And I don’t regret it. But I know it wasn’t the real thing. It wasn’t the real thing.” This sentiment, which could almost be poetry or song lyrics, is spoken by Edna O’Brien in one of the final interviews she gave, which appears toward the end of director …

San Sebastian hands out honours

He may not be a household name in Hollywood but in the Spanish-speaking world there are few better known actors than Argentina’s “Ricardo Darín.”: https://variety.com/2017/film/festivals/san-sebastian-donostia-awardee-ricardo-darin-prizes-politics-1202573551/ And this year he has received San Sebastian’s coveted Donostia Prize. He’s in good company. In the past the award has gone to the likes of Robert Mitchum and Lauren Bacall. I can’t believe it yet, I mean, I have no perspective regarding the festival and its members and other contributors and of course the people of this fair city. I feel so close to them all. I feel so at home that its as if I was being given this prize in my own kitchen,” said Darin. This year Darín is staring in “La Cordillera” or “The Summit” as it’s being called in the US, in which he plays a fictional Argentinian president. It’s a political thriller with psychological hues. It is not based on any particular leader. Christian Slater and Spain’s Elena Anaya share the billing. Our reporter in San Sebastian, Carlos Marlasca applauds the festival’s choice of Ricardo Darin for its highest honour: “Agnes Vardá and Monica Bellucci are the other Donostia award winners but it is mostly Ricardo Darin who has the stronger bond with San Sebastian. He’s presented some of his best films at this festival, films like ‘The Secret in their Eyes’ and ‘Wild Tales’. He’s also won the best actor award for his performance in ‘Truman’ and played his part as a jury member. It’s fitting Darin’s career has now been recognised.”
