Master Scuba Trainer Reveals the Most Dangerous Dives in the World — German U Boat **Where**: 60 Miles off New JerseyThis has to be one of the more famous, dangerous sites in the U.S., even being written about in the book Shadow Divers. The main things that make it dangerous are the depth (200-plus feet), currents, and water temperature. Diving at that depth means that even a small mistake can be very costly. But, the history of the ship is pretty amazing, considering the role these U-boats played in World War II and how relatively close this one was to U.S. shores, making it a great place to explore.

Blue Hole — **Where**: Lighthouse Reef, BelizeIt’s easy to get disoriented here because of the lack of a lot of the spatial references you can have on a normal reef dive, i.e., there are a lot of sheer drop offs for this site. These types of ‘wall dives’ can be dangerous for inexperienced divers because you can easily lose track of how deep you’re going if you’re not monitoring your depth gauge and air supply. **Where**: Coco’s Island, Costa RicaThe main allure and danger of this spot is the sheer remoteness of it. It takes over 35 hours just by boat to get there, so if something happens, it can be difficult to get help. On top of that a lot of the charters will not let you dive there unless you have an advanced diving certification. Where: Sinai, Egypt It’s actually nicknamed by some as the “Diver’s Cemetery” and is considered by some to be one of the more dangerous dive spots in the world. There’s an area called the Arch that connects the Blue Hole with the Red Sea. A lot of divers try to reach the ‘Arch’, which is really deep. The Arch that leads to the open water is at over 180 feet, so a lot of tech-divers want to check it out to say they accomplished it.

**Where**: Andros, BahamasTo get to the Black Hole I think you have to take a helicopter because it is so hard to access. There’s also a lot of sulfur (possibly bacteria) in the water and in general I believe they only perform scientific research here making it a real rarity for any skilled diver.

Devil’s Cave System — **Where**: Ginnie Springs, FloridaCave diving is its own animal. You have to be really, really good. You can lose track of where you are in the cave. But, the waters are extremely clear and some of the pictures actually make it look like divers are floating. The Shaft Sinkhole — **Where**: Mount Gambier, AustraliaIt looks the sinkhole is only accessible through a small “manhole” sized hole, and then the water’s surface is actually not for another 30 feet or so. That makes entering with all your gear pretty interesting and challenging. However, given its relative limited access, it attracts a lot of divers who want to dive where few other divers can go.

Jacob’s Well — **Where**: Wimberley Texas The water looks absolutely incredibly clear, which is the main reason I’m sure people love it. However, some of the chambers have a fine layer of silt. This is where people can get in trouble. If you can’t maintain neutral buoyancy, or control your kicking, you can knock up silt. This can completely disorient some divers, taking away all visibility.

Temple of Doom — **Where**: Tulum, Mexico The history of this location is very attractive to divers. The danger of this dive site comes from the labyrinth of passages that are easy to get lost in. In those passages though they’ve found a lot of fossils, plus there are the really cool limestone formations. The water is also extremely clear in some areas, which is one of the things I would love most about it. There’s nothing like being in water where you feel like you’re floating in air.

Samaesan Hole — **Where**: Samaesan Bay, ThailandIt’s located in an active shipping lane, which brings in a whole host of challenges not even related to the other dive conditions. Due to its depth, its only available for Trimix technical diving, which is a very specialized type of diving that takes some serious training/certification and requires a whole host of different gear. If you’re looking to be a real tech diver then you’ll get the bonus of being able to see bombs that have been left there by the military.
