The Stanley Hotel scared your socks off in The Shining, and now it wants your help.

To celebrate 20 years of new management and to pay homage to the film, the Stanley Hotel is hosting an international maze-design contest to create a maze that will cover 10,100 sq. ft., using 1,600 to 2,000 Alpine Currant hedge bushes. The contest is open to both professional and amateur designers.

The winning creation will be on permanent display in the hotel’s breathtaking front lawn, next to a placard with the winner’s name.

The Stanley Hotel inspired author Stephen King’s best-selling novel, The Shining, after he stayed there with his wife. In 1980, Stanley Kubrick made the book into a film, starring Jack Nicholson.

“There are few hotels in the world that share a history and story as unique as that of the Stanley Hotel,” John W. Cullen, owner of the property, wrote on the hotel’s website. “I am thrilled to share this special moment in my life and the hotel’s history. We have built this place together over the years and I’m excited to invite everyone to be a part of its legacy through this special design contest.”

The winning design will be chosen by a special panel of Estes Park residents, Stanley Hotel employees, and Stanley Film Festival staff. The ribbon-cutting for the maze will take place on the opening night of the 3rd annual film festival on April 30.

The deadline for submissions is Jan. 31.
