‘Doctor Who’ Stars React to Jodie Whittaker as First Female Time Lord
Doctor Who made history by announcing Jodie Whittaker as the first female Doctor and we had several past Doctors and companions come by the Yahoo TV Suite at San Diego Comic-Con to discuss their reaction to the news. “I’m very excited,” says David Tennant, aka the 10th Doctor, who worked with Whittaker on Broadchurch. “I’ve known Jodie for a long time and I got an inkling this might be the way it was going and I spoke to her and she’s just so excited.”
Pearl Mackie, the Doctor’s companion during the just-completed Season 10, echoes that sentiment: “I think she’s going to be great,” she says. Her co-star Michelle Gomez, who knows a thing or two about taking over a previously male role, adds, “For me, coming in and playing the Master, it still blows my mind, and I just happened to be a woman — a fabulous woman. And Jodie, it’s her time.”
“It’s about time!” says Colin Baker, the sixth Doctor. “For heaven’s sake, 12 regenerations and so far it’s remained entirely masculine? My four daughters will be delighted that their sex is finally being appreciated. I mean, why not? Why shouldn’t Time Lords be ladies?”
