Emmys: ‘Stranger Things’ Fans Get Justice For Barb
Stranger Things fans, rejoice, for we have achieved #JusticeForBarb at last. Shannon Purser — who played doomed bespectacled dork Barbara Holland on the cult Netflix sci-fi series — scored an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series, one of 18 nods that the show received overall. It’s easily the most exciting nomination of the bunch as well, considering the way that Barb quickly blossomed from supporting character to enduring Internet meme at the hands of fans who love the character and remain frustrated by her ignoble end as food for the show’s central monster. In fact, Stranger Things creators, the Duffer Brothers, have repeatedly had to promise that Season 2, which debuts October 27, will offer some kind of satisfactory resolution and/or apology for her early exit.
For Pursuer, though, being killed off of Stranger Things has proven to be the best career boost possible. Her Emmy nomination caps a year that’s included a scene-stealing role as Riverdale‘s own Ethel Muggs (a.k.a. Big Ethel) on The CW’s hit Archie Comics adaptation, as well as parts in the upcoming feature films Wish Upon and Life of the Party. She also won the Golden Globes (even if she didn’t actually win a Golden Globe) in January with her hilarious appearance in host Jimmy Fallon’s La La Land spoof. And should she pull off an unlikely, but possible, victory at the Emmys — snatching the statue away from such screen veterans as Cicely Tyson and Ann Dowd — the world may truly turn Upside Down. Nothing that there’s anything wrong, or strange, with that.
