‘Fear the Walking Dead’ Midseason Premiere Preview: The Family Faces Some Familiar Problems
With the Clark/Manawa clan splintered from each other after a fire set by (the now deceased?) Daniel at Thomas’s Mexican compound in May’s Fear the Walking Dead midseason finale, the Los Angeles survivors of the zombie apocalypse will begin to face the increasingly desperate and dangerous scenarios experienced by Rick Grimes and his group since the start of The Walking Dead.
In the Yahoo TV exclusive preview video above, FTWD cast members, showrunner Dave Erickson, and EP Gale Anne Hurd tease what’s ahead in Season 2’s final eight episodes, which kick off with Aug. 21’s “Grotesque,” an episode whose title very accurately describes the horrors within.
“Now that the world has expanded, we can tell greater stories, we can explore different communities,” Hurd says. “There are now not only more and more infected, but in order to survive, the stakes are even greater.”

That means supply challenges, new herds of the dead — and the sometimes even more vicious living — to contend with, all while Madison and Travis are separated from each other, Travis’s son Chris grows more dangerous, Strand is battling his “inner demons” after Thomas’s death, Ofelia is nearly suicidal after the loss of both her parents, and Nick continues his fascination with and empathy for, the dead.
“Nick, he’s given up on trying to understand the dead, and death, and his place in the apocalypse,” Erickson says in the clip.

Adds Nick portrayer Frank Dillane, “[Nick] is trying to get to a safe place, or where there might be more people who empathize with the dead, or at least don’t just go around killing them.”
Fear the Walking Dead Season 2 returns Aug. 21 at 9 p.m. on AMC.
