‘Game of Thrones’ First Look: New George R.R. Martin Box Set
What do you get the Game of Thrones fan who has everything? The obvious answer is early access to the show’s seven-episode seventh season or the long-delayed sixth chapter in George R.R. Martin’s series of novels, but both those things are harder to get hold of than a hot bath north of the Wall. So instead, give them something that will help pass the time until the series returns to HBO on July 16: A limited-edition box set packed to the brim with Westerosi memorabilia from both the show and its source material. Penguin Random House and ReedPOP are unveiling not just one, but two, of these crates full of GoT loot starting June 30.
If you’re one of those Lannisters who has trouble paying your debts, you might want to go with the economical George R.R. Martin ReedPOP Special Edition Box glimpsed above. Retailing for $75, this collection comes with a 20th anniversary limited edition of Martin’s original 1996 novel, A Game of Thrones, as well as lithographs of the continent’s Northern and Southern regions, an online Living Language course to immerse you in the Dothraki tongue, the signature Iron Coin of the Faceless Man, a copy of the last will and testament of poor Robert Baratheon — whose death kicked off this whole bloody game — and a T-shirt, all contained in a keepsake printed box.
If you’ve got a little more (gold) coin to spread around, consider upgrading to the $250 George R.R. Martin ReedPOP Limited Edition Box, where you get all the goodies from the Special Edition set, with a few additional treasures. Treasures like a copy of Game of Thrones: The Card Game with a newly illustrated card featuring Daenerys in all her Khaleesi glory. The Mother of Dragons goes from Khaleesi to Queen in a special miniature, also included, that’s paired with her future ally (we hope!) Jon Snow. Also housed in this GRRM-monogrammed printed box is a Maester’s journal, Holiday sigil shield lights, a silk map of King’s Landing and a previously unreleased set of Dead Man coins memorializing just some of the many fallen characters whose bodies are rotting in far-flung corners of Westeros and beyond.
Whichever box you choose, you’d better act fast: ReedPOP has produced only 3,000 versions of the Special Edition set, and a mere 1,000 of the Limited Edition. Knowing the dedication of Game of Thrones fans, that means both will soon be scarcer than Valyrian steel.
Season 7 of Game of Thrones premieres on Sunday, July 16, at 9 p.m. on HBO. Visit ReedPOP to learn more about the Limited and Special Edition box sets.
