Late Night Shows Blast President Trump Over Comey Firing
Following the abrupt and somewhat surprising firing of FBI director James Comey on Tuesday, late night talk shows took aim at President Trump. Some hosts speculated about why Trump may have fired Comey, others joked about Trump firing Comey when some believe Comey is responsible for Trump winning the presidency in the first place.
One of Trump’s most vocal critics, Stephen Colbert, falls into the latter category.
“That shows no gratitude at all,” Colbert said. “Did Trump forget about the Hillary emails that Comey talked about? I mean, ‘Thanks for the presidency, Jimmy. Now don’t let the door hit ya where the electoral college split ya.’”
Conan O’Brien fell into the same category as Colbert, saying that Trump fired Comey because he still hasn’t forgiven him for making him president.
The Daily Show had a lot to say about the firing, from insinuating that Trump fired Comey to stifle the Russia investigation, to host Trevor Noah speculating on how people in other parts of the world are reacting.
“I know we said Trump was an African dictator, right? But right now, even Africans are watching this going, ‘Yo, yo, yo, yo, yo! Wow, that Trump does not [bleep] around, eh?!’,” Noah said.
Despite all the confusion and speculation, Late Late Show host James Corden believes he’s got it all figured out.
“The White House is saying Comey has been fired for his handling of the Hillary Clinton email investigation. Other people are saying he’s being fired because of the Russia investigation,” Corden said. “While I say Comey is being fired because Donald Trump is crazy! He’s a crazy man!”
