'Manhunt: Unabomber' finale sneak peek: Fitz and Kaczynski meet again
Last week’s penultimate episode of Discovery’s Manhunt: Unabomber ended with the FBI handcuffing Ted Kaczynski (Paul Bettany). “[Tonight’s finale] is kind of like a continued epilogue of what happened after the arrest, which are details nobody really knows,” director-showrunner Greg Yaitanes tells Yahoo TV. “The public doesn’t know how close he came to walking, and this explains really that.”
In the exclusive sneak peek above, we see how FBI profiler Jim Fitzgerald (Sam Worthington) is still trying to persuade Kaczynski to plead guilty by appealing to their shared need to be heard and understood. “You fight this, they’ll call you crazy,” Fitz tells Kaczynski, guessing his lawyers are planning an insanity plea without Ted’s consent. “Or you plead guilty and go away forever, and your ideas will live on.”
The hour also includes a memorable scene in which Kaczynski is forced to hear testimony from some of his victims. “You hear the actors act out the transcripts of the victims, what they said at the court cases, and that’s when it really struck me — yeah, this did happen,” Worthington says. “This guy is a murderer and deserves to be locked away, because the suffering continues. Even though we see it from a distance, the families that got affected 20 years ago are still being affected now.”
The Manhunt: Unabomber finale airs Tuesday at 10 p.m. on Discovery.
