‘Modern Family’ Star Opens Up About Emancipation From Mother
Ariel Winter was on Ellen and discussed the tumultuous relationship with her mother. The Modern Family star has been emancipated from Crystal Workman after alleged physical and emotional abuse. “It has been very sad for me,” Winter explained. “But at the same time, it’s been much better for me emotionally and physically to be on my own and have a better, safer household and support system.”
Prior to receiving emancipation, Winter was involved in a legal custody battle with her sister Shanelle Gray. Gray was able to obtain guardianship over Winter, a bond that Ariel cherishes greatly. “She’s been the best part of my life. She really is my best friend,” Winter told DeGeneres. “She is the most important thing to me. She’s been there for me through absolutely everything. And I just love her so much. I count on her more than anything.”
Ariel and Shanelle do not speak with Crystal, who appeared on Dr. Phil attempting to tell her side of the story. Winter has managed to stay above it all and does not intend to let her relationship with her mother define her.
