Is the Mystery of Amelia Earhart’s Disappearance Solved?

Amelia Earhart disappeared 80 years ago, and her whereabouts are one of the biggest unsolved mysteries in American history. But the mystery may be solved, according to a documentary that will air this Sunday on The History Channel. Amelia Earhart: The Lost Evidence is a two-hour documentary that uncovers records, including a newly revealed photograph.

Did Earhart Survive the Crash?

Former U.S. Treasury Agent Les Kinney discovered the photo hidden and mislabeled in the U.S. National Archives. Kinney says the photo shows Earhart and her navigator, Fred Noonan, on a dock in the Marshall Islands. The photo was subjected to facial recognition and other forensic testing and judged to be authentic, and likely bears the images of Earhart and Noonan. The photo also appears to show the wrecked plane loaded on a barge off in the distance.

The Marshall Islands were occupied by the Japanese at the time, and the filmmakers say that the islands’ military picked up Earhart and Noonan and held them captive. The documentary also argues that the U.S. government knew of the duo’s whereabouts and did nothing to rescue them.

Amelia Earhart: The Lost Evidence airs Sunday at 9 p.m. on History.
