'Once Upon a Time' Hero and Villain of the Week: Bros... or Foes?

Kelly Woo

Warning: Spoilers ahead for this week’s episode of Once Upon a Time.

The honeymoon period of a new bromance can cloud even the purest hero’s vision.

This week’s Once Upon a Time was a veritable bro-fest — unusual, considering that the main characters (Emma, Regina, Snow) are all women. We’ve watched their adventures, their battles, their evolution. David, Hook, etc. have been their romantic interests, which is a refreshing turnabout from most other dramas on television.

But this time, the guys got the spotlight, as David and Arthur bonded in Camelot and Storybrooke, and Hook and Robin connected over their past nefarious ways.

Emma is still wreaking (subtle) havoc as the Dark One in Storybrooke, stealing dwarves’ axes for seemingly no good reason. But it seems she might not be the only one with an evil agenda, as Arthur is revealed to have a lot more up his armored sleeve than we thought.

A familiar face returned, much to our surprise, and a very important figure is back on the canvas. Here’s a rundown of the good guys and bad guys from this week’s OUAT:

Hero of the Week: Hook

In terms of character evolution, Hook rivals Regina for biggest transformation. Just as she went from Evil Queen to a bonafide hero, Hook has gone from dastardly ne’er-do-well to the dashing (possible) savior of the Savior.

Hook tries to get through to Emma, or what’s left of her inside the Dark One, during the weirdest date ever on his ship. She’s trying to seduce him and play on his feelings. If Hook can admit he doesn’t love her, she’ll let him go. But of course, Hook is crazy about her, even if she’s a baddie now. He still believes there’s a shred of decency inside.

Unfortunately, Emma uses the date to get her hands on his sword — the last item to touch Rumplestiltskin before he turned into the Dark One. That allows her to wake him up for her own unknown, evil purposes.

But Hook won’t let her go just yet. He’s determined to break into that locked door that Emma is afraid of — and enlists Robin Hood’s thieving skills to help. Maybe the old Hook would’ve pulled anchor and set sail, but the new, heroic Hook is going to stand his ground and fight for the woman he loves.

Villain of the Week: Arthur

David has a friend! He and Arthur seem destined to be BFFs, from their shared humble backgrounds to common interests (you know, sword fighting and horse riding and stuff). In Camelot, they embark together on a quest to get a magic mushroom that will let Regina talk to Merlin.

But things go awry, and David loses the magic mushroom. Or does he? As we learn in present-day Storybrooke, Arthur isn’t as he seems. His squire stole the mushroom on his orders — then Arthur gives him poison to cover his tracks. All in the name of Camelot, he says.

Not only that, but back in Camelot, Lancelot shows up to warn Snow White about Arthur. Yeah, dead Lancelot. No doubt there is some story there, which we’ll learn soon. In any case, there is a reason Arthur doesn’t sit in the seat for the knight with the purest heart.

Poor David. He finally found a friend, and the friend turns out to be kind of a jerk!

Once Upon a Time airs Sundays at 8 p.m. on ABC.
