O’Reilly Returns to Tell America ‘I’m Sad I’m Not on TV Anymore’
Bill O’Reilly came back from that Italy vacation during which Fox News fired him, and on Monday evening he launched a podcast called the No-Spin News on billoreilly.com. His opening remarks were alternately combative, vague, and totally unrepentant.
“I am sad that I’m not on television anymore,” he began. “I was very surprised how it all turned out. I can’t say much because there is much stuff going on right now. But I can tell you that I’m very confident the truth will come out and when it does … I think you’re going to be shaken. As I am. There’s a lotta stuff involved here. I can’t say any more.”
What? The “truth” is going to “shake” us? And him? What does that mean? O’Reilly was more clear when talking about his old employer, by which I mean talking about himself: “I was [on Fox News] for 20 years and six months. We made history, upward [ratings] graph all the way … that vehicle was fabulous for me.” Yet that vehicle was not so fabulous for the women he allegedly harassed.
O’Reilly spent much of the 19-minute podcast defending Donald Trump (“the left wants to destroy his presidency”) and Ann Coulter’s canceled UC Berkeley speech: “I fear for Ann’s safety. … People on the far left are really insane and dangerous.” He expressed interest in the French election results for “Marnie [sic] LePen … her people are jazzed!” O’Reilly’s return to the media world showcases him on a smaller stage — his website is where he peddles his book and merchandise (“Big discounts for Premium Members,” he reminded us) — but it was clear he craves a bigger audience. He’s even lifted the fee to hear his podcasts for this week only, so that little ears like mine can absorb his garrulous wisdom.
He concluded by saying he hoped we enjoyed “the first edition of the No-Spin News … This is all new. We’ll get better and pithier.” Earlier he’d noted his plan is to turn his podcast “into a genuine news program — that’s the vision right now.” Bill O’Reilly, visionary, still needs a place to plug his “The Spin Stops Here Tour” dates with Dennis Miller and Jesse Watters.
No-Spin News airs Monday through Thursday at 7 p.m. on billoreilly.com.
