'Orphan Black': Vote for the most tragic death
Attention Clone Clubbers: The series finale of Orphan Black airs Saturday, Aug. 12, on BBC America. All this week, we’re celebrating (and mourning) the impending end of our favorite clone saga, and we can’t do it without your help! Orphan Black has been about life — the creation of life, the manipulation of it, and the attempt to live it freely. But from the very first moments of the series, the show has also been about the flip side of life: death.
Quite a few characters have met the Grim Reaper in the past five seasons. This is a story with high stakes, and there’s no higher stake than losing a life. Some deaths, like those of villains such as Ferdinand and Leekie, made us cheer. But other characters’ threads were cut much too soon.
Whose death gutted you the most? Vote for one of the five options below.
Beth (Season 1, Episode 1, “Natural Selection)
The cop was a deeply troubled soul. First came the shocking discovery that she was a clone. That was followed by realizing her lover, Paul, was spying on her. She got hopped up on pills. And then, after fatally shooting a Prolethean/Dyad agent, Beth completely unraveled. Beth was the one to open up this can of clone worms, but it took her suicide to trigger all of the events that followed.
Paul (Season 3, Episode 6, “Certain Agony of the Battlefield”)
Was Paul a good guy or a bad guy? Talk about a hundred shades of grey. As a monitor, Paul never loved Beth, but he truly did fall for Sarah when she was impersonating her sister. He stood up against Dr. Coady and the Castor project and rescued Sarah from their clutches. As they were escaping, he was stabbed by a Castor clone and forced Sarah to keep going without him — a sacrifice of love.
Kendall (Season 4, Episode 6, “The Scandal of Altruism”)
The OG of the clones, Kendall had a tough, lonely life. She was in prison for years for killing daughter Siobhan’s boyfriend. And then Ethan Duncan took her DNA to create the Leda and Castor clones. She essentially lived as a ghost until she reunited with Siobhan, who realized her mother was responsible for Sarah being fostered with her. And just when she once again offered up her DNA to work on a cure for the Leda clones, the evil Evie Cho killed her as a power play.
M.K. (Season 5, Episode 2, “Clutch of Greed”)
The reclusive, brilliant hacker never fit easily into the clone club, but she was as loyal to her sisters as anyone. In the end, with Sarah being pursued by Ferdinand, M.K. impersonated her to let Sarah escape. But once Ferdinand realized her true identity, he lost it. He and M.K. had been enemies for years — she stole his money and botched his Helsinki job. He brutally stomped on her chest multiple times until the light died from her eyes.
Siobhan (Season 5, Episode 8, “Guillotines Decide”)
The gun-toting, no-nonsense, “I mean business” mother hen was, at times, a protector, a therapist, a strategist, and the muscle. Her death came right after the clones felt they’d “won” — releasing all the info about P.T. Westmoreland and Dyad. Then Ferdinand, enraged by Rachel’s betrayal and the crumbling of his dreams, cornered Mrs. S in her own home and shot her in the chest. But S didn’t go down without fighting! She managed to shoot and kill Ferdinand at the very end, before lovingly gazing at a picture of her “chickens,” Sarah and Felix.
