‘Queen Sugar’ Season 1 DVD Celebrates Show’s All-Female Directorial Team
Queen Sugar got fans talking during the Ava DuVernay drama’s first season on OWN. But there’s also a conversation to be had about what went on behind the scenes: The series has an all-female directing team.
It’s an acknowledgment that women may bring a different understanding to a story and that while each director gets to use her own voice to tell it, it’s important that each episode have the same emotional resonance.
The exclusive clip above from the Season 1 DVD extras highlights one particular hour: when Charley (Dawn-Lyen Gardner) and Remy (Dondre Whitfield) shared their tender first kiss. It was directed by Dondre’s wife, Salli Richardson-Whitfield. As he recalls, “Dawn said, ‘Oh my gosh, I’m so nervous.’ And I said, ‘Why are you so nervous?’ She goes, ‘Well, you know, your wife is directing.’ I said, ‘Listen, I’m gonna give you a piece of advice right now. We’ve been together for 19 years, we’ve been married for 14 years. When she says do something, you better do it.’”
Queen Sugar: The Complete First Season is being released May 30. Queen Sugar returns June 20 on OWN, with a two-night Season 2 premiere.
