Negan is the leader of a brutal group known as The Saviors. He rules with an iron fist and directs his group to extort food and supplies from other groups. He and The Saviors claim they offer protection from walkers, but all they really do is take by force.

In the comics, Negan captures several members of Rick’s group. As retaliation for killing several Saviors, Negan decides to kill a member of the group at random. He eventually settles on Glenn and beats him to death with Lucille.
This comics backstory has given fans of the show hope in a strange way, since they believe Glenn may have survived his recent run-in with walkers after being trapped on top of the Dumpster — just so he can later meet Negan.
