‘Sons of Anarchy’ Spinoff and 5 Other Shows That Recast Key Characters
As reported by Deadline, the pilot episode of FX’s Sons of Anarchy spinoff, Mayans MC, will be reshot, and some of the roles will be recast. The show will star Edward James Olmos, and it’s unclear which actors will be staying on.
This was the process for SOA. Shows Fox/FX’s commitment to series. Allows me and Elgin to improve cast, script, and direction! #MayansMC https://t.co/RDV39nIWfv

Sons of Anarchy creator Kurt Sutter tweeted, “This was the process for SOA. Shows Fox/FX’s commitment to series. Allows me and Elgin to improve cast, script, and direction!”
As Sutter mentioned, recasting pilots is fairly common. SOA‘s own Clay Morrow was originally played by Scott Glenn, before being recast with Ron Perlman in the role.
Many other shows have recast roles after shooting the pilot. Full House‘s Danny Tanner was originally played by John Posey, instead of Bob Saget. Buffy the Vampire Slayer‘s resident witch, Willow, would have had a whole different vibe if Riff Regan had stayed in the role, instead of it being recast with Alyson Hannigan.
Gilmore Girls swapped out one funny lady for another, when, after the unaired pilot, they replaced Alex Borstein with Melissa McCarthy in the role of Sookie. And Rachel Dratch was famously replaced by Jane Krakowski as Jenna in 30 Rock. Even the Mother of Dragons isn’t immune to being recast. Daenerys Targaryen on Game of Thrones was originally played by Tamzin Merchant, before Emilia Clarke stepped into the role.
