Spelling Bee Contestant Sneakily Asks Pronouncer to Spell Word
One contestant of the 90th Annual Scripps National Spelling Bee tried to push his luck when it came to the questions he asked about the word he was supposed to spell. Varad Mulay was given the word warison. After asking the pronunciation, part of speech, origin, and for it to be used in a sentence, he asked the question that every contestant wishes he or she could ask. He queried, “Can I have the spelling, please?”
After some laughter, the pronouncer, Jacques Bailly said, “Almost got me.”
Sadly, Mulay was not able to spell the word. He will not be winning the spelling bee, but he became a hero to everyone who has been on the spot to spell a word they didn’t know.
