Stephen Colbert on Trump Calling Him a ‘No-Talent Guy’: ‘I Won’
President Donald Trump recently made some comments about Stephen Colbert in an interview with Time magazine. One of the things Trump said: “You see a no-talent guy like Colbert. There’s nothing funny about what he says.”
So on The Late Show, a giddy Colbert went on to say some more things that Trump definitely won’t find funny. Colbert said to Trump: “There’s a lot you don’t understand, but I never thought one of those things would be show business. Don’t you know I’ve been trying for a year to get you to say my name? And you were very restrained, but now you did it. I won!”
Stephen gets specific
Colbert went on to specifically address a few things Trump said, like, “What he says is filthy. And you have kids watching.” Colbert admitted to using adult language, adding, “And I do it in public, instead of in the privacy of an Access Hollywood bus.”
Trump also took credit for Colbert’s high ratings, especially the time that he appeared on The Late Show. Trump said: “By the way, they were going to take him off television, then he started attacking me and he started doing better. But his show was dying. I’ve done his show … but when I did his show, which by the way was very highly rated. It was the highest rating. The highest rating he’s ever had.” Colbert responded to that statement: “And it’s true, the night you appeared on was very highly rated. In fact, the only episode that got better ratings was the night I had Jeb Bush on. That’s right. You got beat by low-energy Jeb.”
Stephen’s advice for Trump
While Colbert loved getting under Trump’s skin, he gave the president a way to end the constant ridicule. Colbert said, “But since all of my success is based on talking about you, if you really want to take me down, there’s an obvious way … resign.”
The Late Show With Stephen Colbert airs weeknights at 11:35 p.m. on CBS.
