Stephen Colbert's Response to #FireColbert: ‘I Don’t Regret It’
Stephen Colbert was in hot water this week after he delivered a flurry of harsh jokes about Donald Trump during Monday night’s Late Show. One joke in particular was so offensive to some that a #FireColbert movement was started. Colbert kicked off Wednesday night’s show by saying, “I’m your host, Stephen Colbert,” and then looked off-camera and said, “Still? Am I still the host?” before finally exclaiming, “I’m still the host!”
Colbert’s Trump tirade was in response to the president rudely ending an interview with CBS News political director John Dickerson because Trump didn’t want to answer Dickerson’’s questions. Colbert wasn’t happy about how Trump treated Dickerson, and launched into a series of brutal jokes. The one that caused the controversy was about Trump performing oral sex on Russian President Vladimir Putin.
On Wednesday, Colbert said that he didn’t regret it, and that he would do it again, although he did admit he would change a few words that were “cruder than they needed to be.” Colbert then wanted to move forward with a positive message that he hoped everyone, even Trump, could agree with. Colbert said, “Anyone who expresses their love for another person in their own way is, to me, an American hero. And I think we can all agree on that. I hope even the president and I can agree on that,” adding, “Nothing else, but that.”
The Late Show With Stephen Colbert airs weeknights at 11:35 p.m. on CBS.
