‘This Is Us’ Star Chrissy Metz Teases What’s Next on ‘What Now?’
The one good thing to come out of this week’s episode of This Is Us being trumped, er, bumped by the president’s congressional address? Fans’ tear ducts were given an extra week to dry out and recover from last week’s brutal, heart-wrenching installment, in which Randall and William took a road trip to his adopted dad’s “grave” and William’s hometown of Memphis, from which his biological dad did not return.
But Chrissy Metz, who portrays Kate, warns that it is not safe to put away those tissues just yet. When the show returns on March 7 with the penultimate episode of Season 1, the Pearsons will rally around Randall.

“The next episode will cover the rest of the family finding out about William’s death. The family comes together to mourn William,” the actress teased when Yahoo TV caught up with her on the white carpet at the annual Elton John AIDS Foundation Oscars party last Sunday. “It is done in such a tender, fun, sweet, and unconventional way, as is par for the course on This Is Us. That death and that new grief are probably going to bring up some old issues for the big three.”

Metz added that the final chapters of the first season will also reveal more details about Jack’s death, but maybe not in the way one might assume. “You’re definitely going to find out how things were affected by Jack’s passing, and then you will learn more about [his death] in the second season. But you will discover who his passing affected the most by the finale.”
When we guessed that it was her, she shrugged and played coy. “Hmmm. Could be, but maybe not. There are a lot of possible contenders. We’ll have to wait and see.”
She would admit that personally she was destroyed by the “Memphis” episode. “We get scripts, and we get to bawl our eyes out and try to get it all out before we start shooting. But it doesn’t always work,” she said. “I knew what was coming last week, and yet it still got me. It was so beautifully done and it was so touching. I was a mess watching it too. That was a such an impactful storyline.”
As for the official line, NBC has released only a sparse and vague synopsis about the “What Now?” episode that reads: “Jack heads to Cleveland to make things right with Rebecca on the night of her first big gig with the band. Randall, Kate, and Kevin make big decisions about their futures.”
This Is Us airs Tuesdays at 9 p.m. on NBC. Watch clips and full episodes of This Is Us free on Yahoo View.
