'The Walking Dead' First Look: Season 7 Blu-Ray Puts Spotlight on Winslow the Spiky Walker
To celebrate the Oct. 22 Season 8 premiere of The Walking Dead — the series’ 100th episode — Yahoo TV will be posting a new TWD-related story every day through the season opener.
Remember Winslow, the spiky garbage pit walker who Rick Grimes battled in Season 7 of The Walking Dead? Now fans will get their chance to take a stab at Winslow, too … especially if they want access to the Season 7 Blu-ray discs.
The Walking Dead Season 7 Limited Edition Spike Walker Statue with Soft Touch Digipak set from Lionsgate and Anchor Bay Entertainment will collect all five Season 7 Blu-ray discs plus a slew of special features into a must-have package that features a bust of Winslow, including the spikes emerging from his bloody, metal-encased head, and spikes in his chest. In fact, limited edition Winslow is interactive: special mechanics with one of the chest spikes means collectors will have to remove the spike and drive it back into the sculpture to release the Blu-ray box set underneath the bust.
The Limited Edition Spike Walker Statue set, exclusive to Amazon.com and available in October, was created by McFarlane to pay homage to one of the series’ most memorable undead characters ever, featured in the “New Best Friends” episode in Season 7. Winslow, played by TWD special effects makeup artist and extra Gino Crognale, was pitted against Rick in a brutal fight that junkyard group leader Jadis designed to test Rick.
TWD executive producer, director, and special effects whiz Greg Nicotero, who planned Winslow’s creation with showrunner Scott Gimple and then designed the spiky guy, told Yahoo TV after the February episode aired that Winslow was like “an art installation.”
“I started looking back to the scarecrows in Planet of the Apes, which had these big, long… they were really unique. They were big Xs that have this really haunting look. I thought it’d be really cool if we were to somehow mimic that with weapons and rebar and sawblades and nails and knives coming out,” Nicotero said. “We went from there. We refined the design. The helmet is basically a gas tank from a motorcycle … it took us about a month to build him, only because it was something so special and so intricate … I love stuff like that. I love the fact that seven and half years in, we’re able to come up with stuff that still feels iconic and memorable.”
The limited edition set, as well as DVD and Blu-ray collections available on Aug. 22, include bonus audio commentaries; deleted and alternate scenes; and the following featurettes: “Inside The Walking Dead,” “The Making of The Walking Dead,” “In Memorium,” “A Larger World,” “Breaking & Rebuilding,” “A New Chapter of Fear,” “Top Walkers,” “Warrior Women,” and “The Writers of The Walking Dead.”
Additional special edition versions of the Season 7 discs – available on Aug. 22 — include a steel book set available exclusively at Target; a lenticular package Blu-ray set available exclusively at Best Buy; and DVD and Blu-ray sets that include TWD Topps trading cards, available exclusively at Walmart.
