Where to Binge the Casualties of 'Red Thursday'

image

In a bloodbath so epic many on Twitter suggested that only Game of Thrones guru George R.R. Martin could have written it, a whopping 12 network television shows met their end this past Thursday. Some of these series were cut down in their prime, while others were, for lack of a better term, put out of their ratings misery. Still, the sheer number of cancellations is overwhelming, with ABC alone divesting itself of six programs. Fox was close behind with five, and CBS said farewell to one. (Or two if you count Supergirl, which survived the culling by migrating to the CW in the fall.)

It’s possible that a few of these canceled shows might be granted a stay of execution as well; according to reports, ABC’s country music drama, Nashville, is being shopped to other networks and/or streaming services. The majority, though, are bound to stay buried in the ever-growing TV graveyard. Our advice is to spend the weekend sitting binge shiva, catching up with the shows you watched obsessively or meant to watch obsessively. To help you through this mourning period, here’s our guide for where to stream each of the casualties in what will henceforth be known as “Red Thursday.”

Agent Carter (ABC)
Available on:
Amazon, iTunes
Number of Seasons: 2 (18 episodes)
During her too-brief crimefighting career, Marvel’s super-classy super-agent Peggy Carter fought to keep America safe from spies, supervillains, and sexism in the workplace. Sadly, the one opponent she couldn’t overcome was low ratings.
Start With: “The Lady in the Lake”
Season 2 boasts a better-paced arc than the slightly scattershot first year, and the confident premiere — which transports Peggy from New York to sunny L.A. — revs up the action right away.

Bordertown (Fox)
Available on:
Hulu
Number of Seasons: 1 (11 episodes)
Family Guy mastermind Seth MacFarlane skewers Mexico-U.S. border politics in his latest animated provocation. But even MacFarlane couldn’t have predicted that real world border debates would prove more outrageous than anything he and his writers could dream up.
Start With: “Borderwall”
The title speaks for itself.

Castle (ABC)
Available on: Hulu (Season 8)/Amazon (Seasons 1-7)
Number of Seasons: 8 (172 episodes)
For eight seasons, Castle’s passionate fanbase avidly followed the crime-solving exploits of mystery novelist Richard Castle and detective Kate Beckett, known collectively as #Caskett. That’s also why they were so incensed with ABC’s potential plan to move ahead with a Season 9 that wouldn’t feature the Beckett half of that dynamic duo. Better to end the show with a period, rather than a Beckett-less ellipsis.
Start With: “Flowers for Your Grave”
To get the full #Caskett experience, you gotta go back to the very beginning of their opposites-attract romance.

Cooper Barrett’s Guide to Surviving Life (Fox)
Available on:
Hulu
Number of Season: 1 (10 episodes)
Add “cancellation” to the list of survival skills that life-challenged goof-off Cooper Barrett is going to have to master.
Start With: “How to Survive Your Parents’ Visit”
Because Jane Kaczmarek and Alan Ruck play Cooper’s parents in this episode, and it’s beyond wild to imagine Cameron Frye shacking up with Lois from Malcolm in the Middle.

CSI: Cyber (CBS)
Available on:
CBS All Access
Number of Seasons: 2 (31 episodes)
The cancellation of the last-remaining member of the extended CSI franchise marks the end of a series and an entire era. We’ll look forward to the inevitable reboot, CSI: VR, in 2026.
Start With: “Why-Fi”
Ted Danson was brought aboard as a full-time cast member in the Season 2 premiere, and his wry presence provided the series with some invaluable tech support.

The Family (ABC)
Available On:
Hulu
Number of Seasons: 1 (11 episodes)
With the series finale set to air this weekend, we can only hope that this family’s knotty story comes to a convincing close and we get an actual answer to the show’s central mystery: Is Adam really Adam?
Start With: “Pilot”
Provided the writers stick the landing, The Family could be binged and appreciated as an enjoyable (if illogical) limited-series thriller. Honestly, the premise probably couldn’t have supported a second season anyway, which gives them extra incentive to finish it strong.

Galavant (ABC)
Available on:
Amazon (Season 1); Hulu (Season 2)
Number of Seasons: 2 (18 episodes)
While it never truly became the awesome modern-day mashup of Princess Bride and Smash we hoped for (and, frankly, had its “cult musical” thunder stolen by Crazy Ex-Girlfriend), this fantasy musical benefits from a game cast and a bright, energetic score. It’s a fun, easy binge for the Drama Club nerd in your life.
Start With: “Pilot”
Because who wants to see only Act 2 of a musical?

Grandfathered (Fox)
Available on:
Hulu
Number of Seasons: 1 (22 episodes)
At least he’ll always have Fuller House. Although this sitcom was based around the idea of eternal bachelor John Stamos getting a taste of grandfatherhood, Yahoo TV’s Ken Tucker noted in his finale review that the series was at its best when it was The John Stamos and Paget Brewster Show.
Start With: “The Sat Pack”
We got to see a different (and dramatic!) side of Stamos’ Full House/Fuller House co-star Bob Saget when the erstwhile Danny Tanner made a guest appearance as his jealous buddy, Ronnie.

The Grinder (Fox)
Available on:
Hulu
Number of Seasons: 1 (22 episodes)
This one hurts, folks. Our favorite freshman sitcom couldn’t survive the judges’ gavel despite a stellar cast — led by Rob Lowe and Fred Savage — and whip-smart writing. In our imaginary TV universe, The Grinder would last as long as its fictional counterpart: eight seasons.
Start With: “Grinder Rests in Peace”
You should really watch the entire run, but The Grinder’s self-aware genius goes to a whole other level when Timothy Olyphant turns up for a hilarious guest-star arc as himself.

The Muppets (ABC)
Available on:
Hulu
Number of Seasons: 1 (16 episodes)
Thank Rowlf we weren’t the ones who had to tell Kermit and Miss Piggy that they were being canned. We just couldn’t had the disappointment on our favorite frog’s face … or the roundhouse kick that his porcine lover would deliver.
Start With: “Swing Song”
The series went through a mild reboot midway through its run, and the results were promising. This “re-pilot” is a better example of what the show could have been, rather than the actual pilot.

Nashville (ABC)
Available on:
Hulu
Number of Seasons: 4 (86 episodes)
Somewhere, country music queen Rayna James is singin’ the blues as Nashville prepares to release its final track. We got it straight from Avery’s lips that the series filmed alternate endings for this season, so hopefully we won’t be left with any cliffhangers. And Maddie? Just go on home already.
Start With: “Pilot”
Whether you binge all 86 episodes or go with our shortened “Ballad of Rayna and Deacon” version, the series premiere showcases why we got hooked on Nashville in the first place … and why we couldn’t let it go, even when during the darkest days of the Luke/Rayna fiasco.

Second Chance (Fox)
Available on:
Hulu
Number of Seasons: 1 (11 episodes)
A corrupt soul gets a second lease on life that’s now also been cut short. Better luck next time, guy.
Start With: “A Suitable Donor”
If you dare to start at all, may as well do so from the beginning.
