Gold is one of the most central assets in the financial world. Used as a currency standard until the late 19th century, the metal is still thought to be the second safest investment in the world after the U.S. dollar, with the only difference between the two being that dollar deposits yield an interest while gold only delivers a return in the form of price appreciation.
2022 has seen broad market turmoil that has led to investors fleeing away from gold and back into the U.S. dollar as the Federal Reserve's brutal interest rate hike spree delivers large returns for bank deposits. Gold price is also perhaps the most crucially watched indicator these days, as it provides insight into investor opinion about the strength of the U.S. dollar.
The gold mining market forms the backbone of modern day gold, and the sector will be worth $221 billion by the end of this year according to a research report from Market Growth Reports. From then until 2028, it will grow at a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 2.7% to be worth $260 billion by the end of the forecast period. Driving this growth will be more industrial use cases for the metal as well as new technologies that improve mining capabilities and efficiencies believes the research firm.
Another report, this time from Research and Markets, estimates that the gold mining industry was worth $214 billion last year, and it will grow at a CAGR of 3.1% until 2026 to sit at $250 billion. Looking at the industry through use cases, Research and Markets believes that the jewelry end use will grow from $107 billion in 2021 to $125 billion in 2026 with a 3% CAGR. On the other hand, the use of gold as a central bank asset will grow faster than the market as a whole, through a 3.5% CAGR that will see it blossom from being worth $23 billion in 2021 to $27 billion in 2026.
