Roots returned Tuesday night for “Part 2”, and despite being a story full of tragic events, it reminded us of how light can still permeate even the saddest of scenarios. After getting his foot chopped in half, Kunta Kinte was able to find love for the first time since becoming a slave when he woke up and met Bell. The two became close while Bell helped him walk again and eventually, Kunta decided he wanted to marry her.

It’s been nearly 40 years since Roots first aired and this week the legendary miniseries has been remade with a new cast but the same emotional, hard-to-watch scenes of Kunta Kinte’s struggle to be a free man.
